Almost 2 years ago, we adopted the sweetest dog from our local Animal Services shelter. We had visited a few of the dogs there and a couple of them wanted nothing to do with us when we tried to play with them in their little play room. Willy, however, hopped right up in our laps and acted like he was ready to go home with us right that second! We fell in love instantly.
He has been a dream dog, and our family loves him! Not all shelter dogs have the same happy ending though, many sit in shelters waiting for their forever home to find them. There are so many healthy pets in shelters, but only 30% of pets in homes come from a shelter, and an estimated 2.7 million pets remain in shelters each year.
When Laurie Brown-Nagin came across an Animal Control officer carrying a puppy to a vet, she ended up falling in love with the dog, Jingles and adopted him. As a NYC marketing powerhouse, she started the non-profit organization Operation ResCUTE, and packaged together a book detailing Jingles true story, and a plush Jingles! The story explains that many animals found on the street are taken to shelters where they can find loving homes and encourages readers to adopt.

When my son and I read the story of Jingles, we talked about how some dogs end up in the shelter, and that we should always adopt if possible. He really got into the story and emphasized with Jingles, and I think appreciated our own shelter dog, Willy, a little more.
